Being a Freemason for more than half of my adult life, I find myself standing at a crossroads, watching with a heavy heart as the very essence of our beloved fraternity appears to be slipping through our fingers. It is not for a lack of programs, education, or grand ceremonies that is the root cause of our decline; but rather, the dwindling devotion within our hearts that threatens the very core of Freemasonry.
I recently spoke at a Master Mason Association Meeting on the topic of asking the right questions. One of the questions we discussed was the fixation on the question: “Why are Masons leaving the fraternity in growing numbers?”, but rather focusing on “What is it that keeps us coming back and being active in the fraternity?” This change in perspective requires us to look within ourselves and not at external factors.
We have always been quick to blame external factors for this decline – changes in society, shifts in values, and a perceived lack of interest among the younger generation. But perhaps the real issue lies not in the world around us but within ourselves. It becomes too easy to point fingers and search for external solutions, but the true remedy for our fraternity’s woes lies in looking within our hearts. It is time for us to turn inward and reignite the passion that once burned brightly within us if we wish to save our sacred brotherhood.
A Call to Action:
Reflect on Our Commitment: Take a moment to reflect on why you became a Mason in the first place. What drew you to the fraternity? What ideals did you hope to embody? By revisiting our initial motivations, we can rekindle the sense of purpose that may have waned over time.
Embrace the Teachings: Freemasonry offers a treasure trove of wisdom and moral lessons. Dive into the teachings of the Craft, study our rituals, and seek a deeper understanding of our principles. The more we immerse ourselves in our traditions, the more profound our connection becomes.
Foster Brotherhood: Brotherhood is at the heart of Freemasonry. Reach out to your fellow Masons, both within your lodge and beyond. Build strong relationships and support one another in our shared journey of self-improvement.
Lead by Example: Demonstrating our commitment through our actions speaks volumes. Actively participate in lodge activities, offer your time and expertise, and inspire others with your dedication. Be the Mason you aspire to be.
Mentor and Educate: Encourage a culture of mentorship and continuous learning within your lodge. Share your knowledge and experience with newer members, helping them navigate their own Masonic journey.
Give Back: Embrace the Masonic tenet of charity and extend your efforts to benefit your community. By making a positive impact on society, we honor the principles we hold dear.
Freemasonry’s strength lies in the hearts of its members. The decline we perceive is not a result of external forces but a reflection of the devotion within us. To save our fraternity, we must look inward, reconnect with our passion, and rekindle the flame of commitment that has sustained us for generations. Let us renew our dedication to Freemasonry, for it is only by doing so that we can ensure the continued prosperity and relevance of our beloved brotherhood.
Now, lets get out there and make it a great day to be a Mason!
