Be Legendary: What the Jedi Can Teach Freemasons About Living With Purpose

Posted on July 18, 2025July 18, 2025 by R∴W∴ Charles Dyer

We don’t join the Craft just to wear a ring or memorize a ritual.

We take the obligation because we’re called to live a higher life.

We’re not just building ourselves into better men.

We’re building a legacy.

That’s why I want to talk to you, not just as a brother; but as a lifelong Star Wars fan, about what the Jedi can teach us about who we are and why the world needs us now more than ever.

The Call to Be Legendary

There’s a moment in Star Wars that always hits me. Luke Skywalker is staring out at the twin suns of Tatooine, unsure of his place in the galaxy. He knows there’s something more. He just doesn’t know what yet.

Sound familiar?

Every Mason I’ve ever known came to the Craft with that same feeling.

A quiet nudge in the soul. A sense that we were meant to do more, to be more.

We answered the call.

We stepped into the unknown.

And now, we carry the tools, and the truth, to become legendary.

The Force vs. The Great Architect

For the Jedi, the Force is everything. It binds the galaxy together. It flows through all living things.

For us as Masons, it’s the Great Architect of the Universe, a higher power that gives order, design, and moral law to the chaos of life.

Two names.

Two worlds.

But the same idea: We are not the center of the universe. We are here to serve something greater.

That belief changes how you live.

It’s not about titles or trophies. It’s about impact, growth, and the light we bring to others.

Trials and Degrees: Transformation Through Struggle

Becoming a Jedi isn’t easy. Padawans must face the Trial of Skill, the Trial of Courage, and the Trial of the Spirit.

They confront fear, loss, and doubt, not to destroy it, but to rise above it.

Sound familiar?

Every degree in Freemasonry challenges us in a similar way:

  • As an Entered Apprentice, we start the journey inward.
  • As a Fellowcraft, we seek knowledge and discipline.
  • As a Master Mason, we face symbolic death and are reborn with purpose.

It’s not the ritual that makes us legendary.

It’s the man we become because of it.

Leadership Without Ego

The Jedi Council never ruled by force. They guided with wisdom. They trained others. They debated. They listened.

Same goes for our lodges.

Our Worshipful Masters, Wardens, and Past Masters don’t lead for power.

They lead for legacy, to preserve the light, pass the torch, and build the next generation.

True leadership in both worlds is quiet, humble, and full of purpose.

It doesn’t demand attention.

It earns respect.

Emotion, Discipline, and the Dark Side

Let’s be honest: life gets loud.

Anger, fear, stress, ego—they pull at us every day. Jedi are trained to detach, not from love, but from the fear of losing it. That’s where the Dark Side begins.

As Masons, we don’t deny emotion—but we are taught to master it.

We smooth rough edges with the trowel.

We square our actions.

We stay in control—not because it’s easy, but because the world needs calm minds and steady hands.

Sacred Spaces, Sacred Work

Jedi Temples. Masonic Lodges.

Different settings. Same purpose.

They’re places where knowledge is shared, discipline is practiced, and growth happens.

When we step into lodge, we’re not just attending a meeting, we’re entering a space where we become more of who we were meant to be.

It’s sacred because it transforms us.

And then… we transform the world.

Brothers, Let Me Say This Clearly:

We are not just Masons.

We are builders of light in a time of shadows.

We are seekers of truth in a world of noise.

We are leaders, mentors, and warriors of legacy.

Just like the Jedi.

So if you ever wonder why you’re here or what your next step should be, remember this:

You are called to “Be Legendary”.

Not for fame.

Not for titles.

But because the world needs men who build, guide, and serve with honor.

So grab your working tools.

Trust in the Great Architect.

And may the Force be with you… Always.

✴️ Want to Pass This Light Forward?

If this message speaks to you, share it with your lodge, your brothers, or your friends who are still waiting on their own twin-sun moment.

Let’s build more than lodges.

Let’s build a legacy.

Let’s Be Legendary!
