As we are often reminded, our Masonic obligation clearly states that we are to “contribute to the relief of our worthy, distressed, Brother Master Masons, their widows and orphans;” and the Masonic Home is the living embodiment of that obligation. It is an obligation that the Masons of Florida have been living up to for over 106 years.
THE PAST:
Originally known as The Masonic Home and Orphanage, this remarkable establishment opened its doors on April 7, 1919; during a time of economic turmoil, providing refuge not only for the elderly but also for orphans and children in need of care.
Over the years, the Masonic Home of Florida has undergone several transformations, reflecting the evolving needs of its community. In 1920, it transitioned to the Masonic Home of Florida, adapting to a changing societal landscape. As the influence of government support programs like Social Security grew, the institution’s role in caring for children gradually diminished. By the late 1950s, the Masonic Home of Florida shifted its primary focus to providing compassionate care for elderly Masons and their wives or widows.
Intriguingly, some of the residents have come full circle, residing at the Masonic Home both as children and in their later years, a testament to the enduring bonds formed within these hallowed walls.
THE PRESENT:
In 1988, a significant chapter in the institution’s history was written when the original building made way for the construction of the present-day facility. But the most notable transformation occurred in 2017 when the Grand Lodge of Florida took a momentous decision, opening the doors to members of the general public. Since then, the Masonic Home of Florida has become a haven for Masons and non-Masonic members alike, fostering a diverse and inclusive community.
Today the Masonic Home of Florida has a current census of approximately (79) residents within its Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing facility. The facility had a high census of 150+, but dropped off due to the pandemic and has struggled to recover ever since.
In addition to the Clearwater facility, the Masonic Home has launched a Resource Center to assist our Master Masons, their wives and widows across the state with needed services to help them receive the help or care they may need wherever they may be in the state. This program has been modeled after similar programs operating within other jurisdictions and will continue to expand its capabilities into the future.
THE FUTURE:
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Masonic Home, I have had the opportunity to witness the hard work of the staff at the Masonic Home, as well as speak to many residents, family members and Brethren across the state about their thoughts and concerns. The conversations cover a wide range of topics, including the financial impacts to our endowment over time, as well as the location of the Masonic Home in relation to the family’s ability to visit their loved one from across the state. Additionally, the main building is over 35 years old and is in need of refurbishment of we want to maintain a competitive baseline with our competitors in the area. Every one of these topics are important and relevant to every member and individual.
There has been a lot of discussion about the future direction of the Masonic Home of Florida and how to continue to live our obligation by caring for those Masons who are unable to care for themselves. These are important and yet difficult conversations to have, and even more difficult decisions that will need to be made for the future care of our brethren.
We as a fraternity must look toward the future with open eyes and and a pure heart and be willing to focus on delivering quality care, while being fiscally responsible with our actions; and ensure that our ability to care for our Master Masons, widows and orphans, where they need the care; continues as long as our fraternity remains!
Be active… be involved… and live your obligation!
It’s a great day to be a Mason!
